Perwanger family began working as a leather tanner on behalf of the farmers of the neighboring cities. It was traditional for every family having butchered cows at home, to bring the skin to tan and then go to the shoemaker to make tailored shoes. The tanning process in the cask lasted two years.
Franz Pewanger - The family business passed into the hands of Franz Perwanger which supports the production of hides with a small production of wine. Franz first began exporting Perwanger leathers in Northern Europe for the production of footwear and the trappings and bells for pastures.
Birth of Josef Perwanger, grandson of Franz. Returning from World War II receives from his father the reins of the family tannery. Josef was to give the first industrial company setting, buying machinery discontinued by a major tannery in the area. Mountaineering was not yet a recognized sport and the business of leather production was directed mainly to the production of harnesses for pastures, work shoes and clothing.
Josef first met Francesco Delladio, founder of the brand La Sportiva. Both were united by their common passion for the mountains, and the first collaborations with the common desire to evolve the concept of mountain boot.
Josef Perwanger befriends Georg Plotnikow, estimated german chemical of Russian origin who helps Josef in developing a new technology for tanning leather.
Water Resistant - After many attempts and developments Josef finally manages to get a leather with water-repellent properties. Until then, the climbers were forced to soak their boots with grease.
Lorenz Perwanger, son of Josef, replaced his father as head of the family tannery.
In compliance with environmental regulations and following the market demand, Lorenz Perwanger moved part of the production in the tanning district of Arzignano (VI).
Drawing on the teachings of his father and joining the modern technology available, Lorenz developed at the specific request of La Sportiva, the article Nepal Perwanger® first waterproof leather and suitable for bonding edges and rubber bands.
